There are some evenings when I have every intention of being productive.
I'll tell myself I'll just tidy the kitchen, answer one more email, fold the washing or finish one last job before I finally sit down.
Then Harris has other ideas.
As soon as I settle on the sofa, he quietly jumps onto my lap, curls himself into the smallest little ball and begins to purr as though the whole world has suddenly become still. In that moment, I always have a choice. I could gently move him and carry on with my list of things to do.
Or...
I could stay exactly where I am. So I do. The washing can wait until tomorrow. The emails will still be there in the morning. The little jobs around the house aren't going anywhere.
Instead, I reach for a cosy blanket, light my favourite autumn fragrance and simply enjoy the quiet company of a cat who reminds me that not every moment has to be filled with doing.
Sometimes the most meaningful moments are the ones we never planned. The ones where nothing particularly exciting happens. Just a warm lap. A softly glowing burner. The comforting scent of autumn drifting through the room.
A gentle purr.
And the feeling that, for a little while, everything is exactly as it should be. Harris will eventually stretch, wander off and continue with his evening. The to-do list will still be waiting for me. But so will the memory of choosing to pause instead of rushing.
Perhaps that's why these are some of my favourite moments of all. Because sometimes slowing down isn't about finding more time. It's about noticing the time we already have.
