There's something wonderfully calming about lighting a candle.
The gentle flicker of the flame.
The soft fragrance filling the room.
The feeling that, for a little while, life has slowed down.
With just a little care, your candle will not only last longer but will also burn more beautifully every time you light it.
The First Burn Matters
The very first burn is the most important.
Allow your candle to burn long enough for the melted wax to reach close to the edges of the container. This usually takes around 2–4 hours, depending on the size of the candle.
This helps prevent tunnelling, where the candle burns straight down the centre and leaves wax around the edges.
A full melt pool on the first burn encourages an even burn for the life of your candle.
Trim the Wick
Before each burn, trim the wick to around 5 mm.
A shorter wick helps create a steady flame, reduces soot and allows your candle to burn more cleanly.
If the flame begins to flicker or produces black smoke, it's usually a sign that the wick needs trimming.
Don't Burn for Too Long
As tempting as it is to keep your favourite fragrance burning all evening, it's best to enjoy your candle for no more than four hours at a time.
Allowing it to cool before relighting helps protect both the wax and the fragrance.
Keep the Wax Clean
Dust, wick trimmings and matches can all affect how your candle burns.
Before lighting your candle, take a quick look to make sure the surface of the wax is clean and free from debris.
Burn Safely
Always place your candle on a stable, heat-resistant surface and keep it away from curtains, pets, children and anything that could catch fire.
Never leave a burning candle unattended.
When you're ready to leave the room, extinguish the flame first.
Knowing When to Say Goodbye
As your candle reaches the end of its life, leave around 1 cm of wax in the bottom of the container.
Burning beyond this point can cause the vessel to become too hot.
Once your candle has finished, give the container a good clean and consider giving it a second life as a plant pot, pen holder or storage jar.
