📚 Chapter 19: Wax Melt & Candle Storage Hacks: Keep Your Fragrance at Its Best

You've found a fragrance you absolutely love. You might even have bought a few extras so you don't run out,  we've all been there! But have you ever thought about where you're storing your wax melts and candles?

It might not seem particularly important, but how you store your home fragrance can make a difference to its appearance, fragrance and overall quality.

The good news is that you don't need any fancy storage solutions. A few simple habits can help keep your favourite scents looking and smelling their best until you're ready to enjoy them.

1. Keep Them Somewhere Cool

Wax and heat aren't exactly the best of friends. Leaving wax melts or candles somewhere that becomes particularly warm can cause the wax to soften, sweat or even begin to melt. Avoid storing them next to radiators, fireplaces or other sources of heat. A cool cupboard, drawer or shelf away from heat is usually a much happier home for them.

And if we're lucky enough to get one of those surprisingly hot British summer days, it's worth checking that your usual storage spot hasn't suddenly become much warmer than normal!

2. Keep Them Away From Direct Sunlight

That sunny windowsill might look beautiful, but it's not the best place for your wax collection. Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight and heat can affect the appearance of wax and may cause colours to fade or change over time.

Candles are better displayed somewhere away from strong sunlight too. Think cool, shaded and dry when choosing your storage spot.

3. Keep Wax Melts in Their Packaging

It's tempting to unwrap all your wax melts and arrange them beautifully in a basket or jar, particularly when they're too pretty to hide away. But their packaging isn't only there to make them look lovely.

Keeping melts wrapped or in their original packaging helps protect them from dust and keeps different fragrances separated. This is particularly important if you have a large collection. Strong fragrances stored closely together without protection can start to mingle,  and your fresh linen probably doesn't need to become best friends with pumpkin spice!

4. Give Different Fragrances Their Own Space

If you're anything like me, your wax melt collection can grow surprisingly quickly. One minute you have three fragrances. The next you apparently need an entire drawer. Try keeping individually wrapped melts organised by fragrance family or season.

You could have little sections for:

Fresh & Clean
Fruity
Floral
Sweet & Bakery
Autumn & Winter
Christmas

Not only does this help protect and organise your collection, it also makes choosing your next fragrance much more fun.

5. Try a Wax Melt Drawer or Storage Box

You don't need specialist wax melt storage. A simple drawer, lidded storage box or basket kept somewhere cool can work perfectly. Dividers can be useful if you have lots of fragrances, particularly for smaller melts and tester pots. You could even create your own little fragrance library at home, with different sections for different scent families. Suddenly being slightly obsessed with wax melts looks incredibly organised. 😉

6. Don't Forget About Moisture

Wax melts and candles prefer a dry environment. Avoid particularly damp or humid areas such as bathrooms or sheds for long-term storage. A bedroom drawer, cupboard or storage box inside the house is usually a much better option.

7. Store Candles Upright

Candles should ideally be stored standing upright on a flat, stable surface. This helps protect the wax and wick and prevents the container from being knocked around unnecessarily. If your candle has a lid, pop it back on once the candle has completely cooled after use. A lid can help keep dust and debris away from the wax between burns. If it doesn't have one, simply keeping it somewhere clean and protected works perfectly well.

8. Let Candles Cool Before Putting Them Away

This sounds obvious, but it's an important one. Never move, cover or store a candle while the wax is still hot or liquid. After extinguishing your candle, leave it somewhere safe and allow the wax to cool and solidify completely. Once everything has cooled, you can tidy it away ready for next time.

9. Rotate Your Collection

If you've built up quite the fragrance stash, try using your older melts before continually reaching for the newest ones. You could even create a little "melt next" basket. Pop a handful of fragrances into it at the beginning of the week or month and work your way through them. It's a lovely way of rediscovering scents you've forgotten about, and might stop you finding something at the back of a drawer and wondering when on earth you bought it!

10. Save Seasonal Scents Properly

There's always that slightly sad moment when Christmas or autumn fragrances are packed away for another year. If you're saving seasonal wax melts, make sure they're securely packaged before putting them into storage. Keep them somewhere cool, dark and dry until their season rolls around again. Then there's something rather lovely about opening that box months later and rediscovering all those familiar fragrances. It's almost like unpacking the season itself.

11. Label Mystery Melts

We've probably all done it.

You find a little piece of wax at the bottom of your collection and think:

"I know I loved this... but what on earth is it?"

If you've divided larger snap bars or removed melts from an outer box, keep the original label with them or add your own little label. Your future self will thank you.

12. Don't Save Your Favourites Forever

This might be my most important storage tip of all. Sometimes when we find something we really love, we save it. And save it. And save it some more. But wax melts and candles are made to be enjoyed.

Of course, store them properly and look after them, but don't wait endlessly for the "perfect" occasion to use your favourite fragrance.

A rainy Tuesday can be the occasion. Finishing the housework can be the occasion. Getting into your pyjamas ridiculously early can definitely be the occasion. Your favourite fragrance doesn't need to be saved for a special moment.

Sometimes the fragrance is what makes the moment special.

So, organise your collection, keep it cool and protected, and then most importantly... Use it. Enjoy it. And let those beautiful fragrances become part of your everyday life. Because the best place for your favourite scent isn't always tucked safely away in a drawer.

Sometimes it's melting gently in your favourite burner or filling the room from a carefully tended candle while you enjoy another little Moment to Melt For. 🤍
