But did you know that those first few hours can have a lasting impact on how your candle performs? The first burn is more than simply enjoying your new candle, it's helping to set it up for every burn that follows.
What happens during the first burn?
As your candle burns, the heat melts the wax across the surface, creating what's known as a melt pool. Ideally, the wax should melt almost all the way to the edge of the vessel before you extinguish the flame. Depending on the size of your candle, this usually takes between 2 and 4 hours. This first full melt helps the candle burn more evenly throughout its life.
Why is it so important?
Wax has what many people describe as a "memory."
If a candle is extinguished before the melt pool has reached the edges, it can continue to burn in that smaller circle each time it's lit. Over time, this leaves a ring of unused wax around the edge of the vessel, a problem known as tunnelling. Giving your candle enough time during its first burn helps reduce the chance of this happening and allows you to enjoy more of the wax you've paid for.
