📚 Chapter nine - Why you can't smell your wax melts

Have you ever been enjoying your favourite wax melt, only to suddenly realise you can't smell it anymore?

Before you start wondering if something is wrong with your wax melts, the good news is...It probably isn't. In fact, what you're experiencing is completely normal. It's something known as olfactory fatigue, sometimes called nose blindness, and it happens to all of us.

Let's explore why.

What is olfactory fatigue?

Our sense of smell is incredibly clever.

When we're surrounded by the same fragrance for a period of time, our brain begins to treat it as part of the background. Instead of constantly reminding us that the fragrance is there, it starts to filter it out. This is your brain's way of helping you notice new smells that may be more important. It doesn't mean your wax melt has stopped working. It simply means your brain has become used to the fragrance.

Is my wax melt still giving off fragrance?

Most likely, yes.

One of the easiest ways to test this is to leave the room for a few minutes. When you return, you'll often notice the fragrance again. You may also find that family members or visitors comment on how lovely your home smells, even when you can barely detect the fragrance yourself.

That's because they're experiencing it with a "fresh nose."

Why does it happen?

Several things can affect how strongly we notice a fragrance, including:

🤍 Spending a long time in the same room.

🤍 Repeated exposure to the same scent.

🤍 Individual differences in our sense of smell.

🤍 The type of fragrance you're using.

Fresh, lighter fragrances may seem to fade more quickly, while richer scents can linger for longer, but both can still lead to nose blindness over time.

How can I refresh my sense of smell?

Fortunately, there are a few simple things you can try.

🌿 Step outside for some fresh air.

🚶 Spend a few minutes in another room.

🪟 Open a window to let fresh air circulate.

🕯️ Rotate between different fragrance families rather than using the same scent every day.

Many fragrance lovers enjoy changing their scents with the seasons or even throughout the week, keeping every fragrance feeling fresh and exciting.

It's all part of the fragrance journey

One of the wonderful things about home fragrance is that every scent creates a different mood.

Some bring energy.

Some create comfort.

Others remind us of favourite places or special memories.

If you find yourself wondering why you can't smell your wax melts anymore, remember...

Your fragrance hasn't necessarily disappeared.

Your brain has simply become wonderfully familiar with it.

And sometimes, all it takes is a little fresh air before you fall in love with that fragrance all over again.

🤍 Here's to life's little moments.

With love,
