Let's talk about something I've noticed.
When we think about wax melts, candles and home fragrance, the images we see are often very similar. Pretty packaging. Soft colours. Flowers. Fluffy blankets. A perfectly placed cup of tea. And more often than not, they're marketed towards women.
But I've always wondered...
Who decided that wanting your home to smell amazing was a women's thing? Because surely enjoying a lovely fragrance has absolutely nothing to do with whether you're a man or a woman.
Men Like Nice-Smelling Homes Too
It sounds obvious when you say it out loud, doesn't it? We all live in our homes. We all want them to feel comfortable. And I'm fairly certain nobody has ever walked through their front door and thought:
"I'd really prefer it if my house smelled terrible."
Yet home fragrance is still often presented as something predominantly for women. Perhaps it's time we changed that. Fragrance Doesn't Have a Gender There's sometimes an assumption that men should prefer certain types of fragrance.
Woody.
Smoky.
Spicy.
Aftershave-inspired.
And yes, plenty of men probably love those scents. But plenty will also love vanilla.
Or coffee.
Or citrus.
Or lavender.
Or something ridiculously sweet that smells like you've just walked into a bakery. Because fragrance is personal.
The scent you love might remind you of somewhere you've travelled, something you ate as a child, a person you love or simply a feeling you enjoy. None of those memories come with a label saying "for men" or "for women". Maybe We Need to Change How We Talk About Home Fragrance I think sometimes it's not the product that puts men off. It's the way we present it.
Home fragrance is often tied very closely to the traditional idea of self-care, bubble baths, face masks, candles and an evening of pampering. And there's absolutely nothing wrong with any of those things. But comfort can look completely different from one person to another.
It might be putting some music on. Watching football. Gaming for an hour. Cooking something you love. Reading. Sitting outside with a coffee. Or finally getting five minutes to yourself after a busy day. And yes, your favourite fragrance can be quietly melting in the background while you do any of them.
Wax Melts Aren't Just Decoration Perhaps that's another misconception. Wax melts aren't something you have to carefully arrange next to a vase of flowers and a perfectly folded blanket. They're simply a way of making your space smell the way you want it to smell. Want your home to smell fresh and clean?
Go for it. Want it to smell like coffee? Absolutely. Want your living room to smell like cherry sweets? Why not? Want pumpkin spice in July? I'm certainly not going to judge you. Actually, I might join you.
That's the lovely thing about fragrance. There really aren't any rules.
Wax Melts Can Make Brilliant Gifts for Men Too Home fragrance probably isn't the first thing many of us think about when buying a gift for a man. But perhaps it should make the list more often. Instead of automatically reaching for the usual socks, shower gel or another mug, why not choose a fragrance that actually reminds you of them?
Maybe they love coffee. Perhaps they're happiest outdoors. Maybe they always choose fresh, clean fragrances. Or perhaps they're the person who secretly steals your favourite vanilla wax melts anyway.
Choosing fragrance can actually be incredibly personal. You're not simply giving someone something that smells nice.
You're saying: "This made me think of you." And I think that's what makes any gift special. What If We Just Chose What We Loved? Maybe that's really the point. We don't need men's wax melts. We don't need women's wax melts. We just need fragrances people love. Because our homes should feel like us.
They should contain the things we enjoy, the memories we've collected and those little comforts that make walking through the front door feel good.
And if part of that happens to be a wax burner quietly filling the room with your favourite fragrance? Even better.
So perhaps it's time we stopped asking whether wax melts are for men or women. There's really only one question that matters...
