The Biggest Myth About Owning a Small Business? It's Never Just About the Products.
When people discover Melting Moments, they usually see the finished picture.
They see beautifully hand-poured wax melts, carefully wrapped orders, cosy photographs and seasonal collections. They might see a blog post, a behind-the-scenes video, or a new product appearing on my website.
What they don't always see are the countless hours behind those moments.
The evenings spent learning something completely new. The weekends tweaking my website. The photographs that took far longer than expected to get just right. The moments of self-doubt, followed by the excitement of seeing an order arrive and remembering exactly why I started.
Owning a small business has taught me that it's so much more than making products. It's about wearing every hat imaginable, maker, photographer, website designer, customer service advisor, marketer, writer, problem solver, and chief tea maker!
It's certainly not always easy, but I can honestly say it's one of the most rewarding journeys I've ever been on.
So today, I thought I'd share a few of the biggest myths about running a small business, and what I've discovered along the way.
💛 Myth 1: You work less.
The reality is that you don't always clock off at 5pm. Ideas arrive while you're making tea, walking the cats, or lying in bed thinking about tomorrow's orders.
💛 Myth 2: It's all making products.
In reality, pouring wax is only one small part. There's photography, website updates, product descriptions, social media, blogs, emails, bookkeeping, stock ordering... and then you finally get to make the wax melts!
💛 Myth 3: Every day is exciting.
Some days are full of creativity. Other days are spent renaming photos, updating listings or answering emails. Those quieter jobs are just as important, even if they aren't glamorous.
💛 Myth 4: Success happens overnight.
Most people only see the finished website or the beautiful product photos. They don't see the months spent learning, making mistakes, and trying again.
💛 Myth 5: Small wins don't matter.
I actually think they're everything.

Someone recommending you to a friend.
Those moments deserve celebrating because they're the building blocks of something much bigger.
Owning a small business has taught me that success isn't just measured in sales or followers. It's measured in the smile you get when you tuck a thoughtful card into someone's parcel. It's measured in kind messages from customers, the excitement of a new idea, and the quiet pride of creating something with your own hands. It isn't always easy, but I wouldn't change it for the world.
